Dr. Valerie Caldeira, R.Psych.
Dr. Valerie Caldeira is a Registered Psychologist who specializes in the assessment and treatment of anxiety, depression, stress-related problems, self-esteem issues, and family conflict. The main focus of her clinical practice is cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) for children, adolescents, and adults coping with depression and/or anxiety disorders, including Social Anxiety Disorder, Panic Disorder, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, and Specific Phobias (e.g., fear of heights, needles etc). Dr. Caldeira also has training and expertise in treating individuals with chronic pain.
Dr. Caldeira is committed to best practice standards for the psychological services she provides to children, adolescents, adults, and families. She believes strongly in client-centered, collaborative formulations and treatment plans that are founded on evidence-based practice. Dr. Caldeira has attended specialist workshops on CBT, which has been shown to be highly effective in treating problems with mood and anxiety. She works with clients to help them better understand their problems and develop personalized plans to achieve specific goals. The collaborative approach she takes with her clients emphasizes learning new skills to better manage and overcome anxiety, depression, and stress.
Dr. Caldeira has numerous peer-reviewed publications and presentations in the areas of family aggression, substance use, and depression. She has presented her work at several national and international conferences. She has also been invited to present her research to community audiences. Her research interests focus on harmful relationship behaviours, including partner aggression and substance use during the transition to parenthood in order to understand the impact these behaviours have on children and the family system. By assisting in the formulation of effective prevention and treatment programs that reduce harmful relationship behaviours, Dr. Caldeira hopes to create healthier and happier families.
Dr. Caldeira completed her doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology at the University of Victoria in British Columbia. During her graduate training, she received numerous academic awards, including a gold medal from the British Columbia Psychological Association for outstanding achievement in the study of psychology and a certificate of academic excellence from the Canadian Psychological Association (CPA). She completed a CPA-accredited pre-doctoral residency at the Edmonton Consortium, working primarily at the University of Alberta Hospital and the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital. During her residency, she worked with individuals across the lifespan and received specialized training in forensic psychology and health psychology (e.g., chronic pain, HIV, neuromuscular impairments). Dr. Caldeira’s clinical training has also included placements at a variety of clinical, hospital, and community settings, including the Victoria Anxiety Clinic at Royal Jubilee Hospital, Queen Alexandra Centre for Children’s Health, Saanich Child and Youth Mental Health Services, and the University of Victoria Psychology Clinic. In addition to her private practices, she is also a consultant for CBT Connections where she trains mental health professionals in evidence-based treatments for a range of mental health concerns.
