Dr. Miao has expertise in the assessment and treatment of depression, obsessive compulsive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, panic disorder, agoraphobia, specific phobias, and difficulties in adjusting to life stressors and transitions. Dr. Miao has particular interests and expertise in treating young individuals struggling with dysregulated emotions, difficult peer and family relationships, low self-esteem, and high-risk behaviours such as self-harming and substance use.

Dr. Miao’s clinical approach is collaborative, flexible, and client-centered. She strives to help her clients feel understood and accepted, and she works with each client to develop and work towards meaningful goals that can greatly improve their quality of life. Treatment often involves learning skills to cope with distressing thoughts and emotions. In her work with younger clients, Dr. Miao likes to be family- and relationship-oriented, while balancing and respecting teen’s increasing developmental needs for autonomy. Dr. Miao only practices treatments that have been supported by research to be effective in treating her clients’ concerns. Her primary treatment approaches are Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), and Motivational Interviewing.

Dr. Miao has extensive experiences providing psychological services across a wide range of hospital and community settings: Surrey Memorial Hospital, Saanich Child and Youth Mental Health, Royal Jubilee Hospital’s Anxiety Clinic, Island Health Developmental Disabilities Mental Health Team, and Forensic Psychiatric Hospital in Coquitlam. Dr. Miao received her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Victoria, where she specialized in Lifespan Development. Prior to obtaining her degree, she completed a one-year Canadian Psychological Association-accredited residency at Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences, specializing in treating adults with severe mental health conditions and high-risk youth with emotion regulation challenges. Her training with teens involved working closely with youth, families, and schools, and through delivering family group therapy and parenting interventions.

In addition to her private practice at North Shore Stress and Anxiety Clinic, Dr. Miao currently holds a position at the Burnaby Centre for Mental Health and Addition, where she assesses and treats individuals with chronic and severe mental health conditions that often require involuntary hospitalization. Aside from her clinical work, Dr. Miao has been active in publishing her research on parent-youth relationships in immigrant families, delivering talks in health care and community settings, and providing supervision and mentorship.

In her spare time, Dr. Miao enjoys a nice balance of indoor and outdoor activities, such as exploring new cafes and restaurants, hiking, painting, and Zumba dancing.

Dr. Miao offers psychological services in both English and Mandarin.
