What is a psychoeducational assessment?
Psychoeducational assessments (also known as “psych-eds” or “psychoeds”) are typically done when a child, adolescent, or adult is struggling at school or at work. These comprehensive evaluations are intended to provide information on:
- How individuals learn, including both strengths and struggles
- Why school and other aspects of life are so challenging
- Why results are not reflecting efforts
- How individuals can be best supported at home and school.
What do psychoeducational assessments measure?
Psychoeducational assessments examine a range of areas of functioning that relate to school and work performance, including:
- Cognitive/intellectual functioning (i.e., thinking and problem-solving skills)
- Learning/academic skills (e.g., reading, written expression, oral language, math)

- Memory
- Attention/concentration
- Executive functioning (e.g., planning, organization, decision-making)
- Perceptual and fine motor abilities
- Social, emotional, and behavioural functioning

What do adult ADHD assessments typically include?
- Clinical interview to identify possible symptoms of ADHD and to rule out other conditions that might better account for those symptoms
- Detailed history taking
- Standardized testing of attention, impulse control, and other aspects of executive functioning
- Questionnaires for the client and often a family member or significant other
- Personalized feedback and practical recommendations, including options for treatment or learning coping strategies (e.g., cognitive behaviour therapy or CBT), improving executive functioning (e.g., through skills-based coaching), and workplace or school modifications.
