Dr. Lisa Brown is a Licensed Psychologist who provides therapy for a wide range of mood and anxiety disorders. She has extensive experience supporting individuals coping with depression, panic attacks, social anxiety (extreme shyness), generalized anxiety (chronic worry), post-traumatic symptoms, and phobias. Dr. Brown also offers skills training in stress management, assertiveness, and anger management, helping clients navigate challenging life circumstances and build resilience.
Educational Background and Clinical Training
Dr. Brown completed her undergraduate degree at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. Initially pursuing language and politics, she discovered her passion for psychology and went on to earn her doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Simon Fraser University, along with an additional diploma in Forensic Psychology. Her mentors included renowned psychologists Dr. James Ogloff and Dr. Stephen Hart. Dr. Brown began her specialized training in cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) during her first practicum at the Anxiety Disorders Unit at UBC Health Sciences in 1993. She gained further clinical experience in a variety of settings and completed her predoctoral internship at the Health Psychology Clinic. During this time, she provided short-term individual and group therapy, developing a strong foundation in evidence-based approaches.
Professional Experience
Dr. Brown has been a Registered Psychologist in British Columbia since 2003. Before joining the North Shore Stress and Anxiety Clinic (NSSAC), she operated a private practice in Burnaby. Moving to NSSAC allowed her to collaborate with a dynamic group of therapists in a supportive and stimulating environment.
Therapeutic Approach
Dr. Brown is known for her warm and compassionate style. She works collaboratively with clients to set meaningful goals for change, using evidence-based techniques to help them improve their quality of life. In addition to her background in CBT, Dr. Brown has completed extensive additional training in Acceptance and Commitment (ACT) therapy. She has found that ACT provides an excellent framework through which clients can move forward even in the face of losses and other difficult life circumstances. Dr. Brown is grateful for the opportunity to apply her expertise in psychotherapy and support her clients in navigating challenges.
Personal and Professional Fulfillment Dr. Brown is an enthusiastic and engaged member of the NSSAC team, valuing collaboration and connection. Outside of her professional life, she enjoys spending time with friends and family, knitting, or out in the garden.
